Mobile phone apps now much more than just the iPhone

Mobile phone apps now much more than just the iPhone Publishers looking to develop mobile phone apps should not limit themselves to the iPhone, for a growing number of apps are also now being created for Google's Android operating system too. According to research by mobile ad network AdMob, seven out of ten iPhone developers will launch Android apps within the next six months. AdMob also claims that 10% of UK mobile advertising traffic is generated by Google Android users

Omar Hamoui, founder and CEO, AdMob, said, "Developers and publishers are building engaging services across multiple mobile platforms and need the tools to effectively monetise their traffic."

In addition to the Android and iPhone platforms Nokia has its Ovi system while both Microsoft and Blackberry also have app platforms.

Smartphone sales are expected to rocket in the next few years with analysts Parks Associates predicting that smartphone users will quadruple, exceeding 1 billion worldwide by 2014.

'The mid-tier and entry-level smartphone markets are now ripe with greater opportunities,' says Harry Wang, Director, Health and Mobile Product Research, Parks Associates. 'Providers and manufacturers that offer well-designed models tailored to the needs of specific consumer segments, as opposed to the one-size-fits-all approach, will be successful'
